Hey Oppo I’m on the search for a new vehicle at a steal(aren’t we all) and have been seeing auctions as more and more of a viable choice for the car search. Does Oppo have any experience in this? I have a dealer to go with so getting licensing and all that is no issue, just wanted maybe some tips. Im specifically searching for a 2011-2014 Mustang GT with a manual to hold me over until I can afford the big boys like the GT350. Im in SoCal if it makes a difference to anyone. Im also looking for complete and running vehicles with clean titles, no salvage ones. Thanks Oppo! Photo of my first car for your trouble!

This is good listening, and he has a lot to say about auctions.

Only classic car auctions, new-ish car auctions usually mean something is very wrong or shady in my mind.

Some of them will let general public in. I bought a beater to learn to drive stick from one. You’re taking a risk, because you can’t drive the vehicle. You can only assess what you can see visually, everything else is just your best guess.

I use auto brokers and have bought nearly every vehicle I’ve owned from auctions. Typically you tell them what you want how much you want to pay and they give you a ring when one comes up. Usually around $500 and you don’t pay till they sell it to you, so I’ve always got one looking for ridiculous pie in the sky deals, and occasionally they hit. You do need a couple months typically, unless you are looking for fleet vehicles. I generally save enough even if I ship it halfway across the US, get new tires and dings taken care of and pay the broker i can turn around and sell it at a small profit or at least not take a loss. Sure as shit beats Craig's list.

If you’re near the south bay area, in Gardena is BLOK auto charity auctions. Pretty good selections, you can come in on non-auction days to look and start the engines, and the people are nice when we were there.

My older brother got a G35 from there, and my twin brother got a 2000 Mustang GT (that I own now) from there.

I don’t know how they are now, but they have a site, though they don’t feature all of there cars online.

I don’t. Only because they’re in really shady parts of town, and all of the cars belonged to criminals or drug users.
